At a press conference, held on November 8, 2011, the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) announced that  the KCSA chairman,  Oleksandr Popov, had signed the Covenant of Mayors for sustainable energy development.

“Recently we approved a municipal program of increasing energy efficiency for 2011-2015. It is time to develop a municipal energy plan for the capital. Signing of the Covenant of Mayors is one more step towards implementation of the energy efficient renovation of municipal utilities and will be, if successful reflected in the Strategy of development of the City of Kyiv until 2025” - Oleksandr Popov emphasized.

He noted that joining the Covenant of Mayors by Kyiv was an important and fundamental step. The city authorities have been well-aware of the fact that energy saving and energy efficiency issues are in the foreground for the capital of Ukraine.

“No doubt, we are taking upon ourselves the responsibility for work towards energy saving and making a positive impact on the environmental situation through reduction of green-house gases’ emission. I want to assure our colleagues that Kyiv, after signing the Covenant, will be a reliable partner for implementation of programs dealing with energy saving and energy efficiency” -  Oleksandr Popov noted.

In particular, the capital authorities will promote efficient use of energy resources, control reduction of harmful emissions and provide sustainable development of the city.

In addition, in accordance with the Covenant the city administration will commit itself to develop a  Sustainable Energy Action Plan for Kyiv within a year and to present it to the local community.
